When IKEA decided to embrace mixed use development they wanted an architect who really understood how to successfully blend retail and residential uses; they choose Black.

They realised that the move from out of town retail development to more complex urban contexts required skill and sensitivity, coupled with a design philosophy based on physical and environmental contextualism. Our scheme takes maximum advantage of the adjacent Hillingdon Tube Station to offer customers the opportunity to shop the store by public transport, creating a new station entrance and public plaza with kiosk retail units providing continuity and enclosure of the public space while screening it from the adjacent railway lines. The IKEA store is arranged over three floors to minimise land use and create a new urban store format. The roof of the store is conceived as a landscaped courtyard roof garden, providing a private urban oasis for the residents of the 240 apartments surrounding it.
