IKEA Southampton attracts 2 million visitor per annum, creates 500 jobs and has a turnover in excess of £55 million; so it was essential Black were able to reconcile it with the city.

The design of a large scale, IKEA store, situated in the heart of the Southampton maximises the site's development potential by reinventing the traditional store format and parking with an innovative, high density, multi storey design. The key to the developments success is the creation of an efficient spatial diagram which clearly separates the store, its circulation and customer car parking. Heating and cooling comes from the nearby Southampton Geothermal Heating Company (SGHC) via 1 mile deep borehole and district CHP system, saving 192 tonnes of carbon for cooling and 106 for heating per annum. Rainwater collected from the roof is stored in a 60,000 lt storage tank and used to flush the stores WC's and irrigate the garden centre plants which is predicted to save 3,240 m³ of water per annum.
