A dirty, greasy scrap yard in Lewisham is not the most salubrious of sites but Black revel in opportunities to turn low value brownfield sites into high quality, holistically sustainable, mixed use developments

The vertically integrated, retail led, development places a multi-storey car park on the ground and first floors in the middle of the site and then screens it with active inhabited edges which respond to the nature and scale of the surrounding context. The entrance and travellators that connect the ground floor entrance with the elevated sales floor occupy the prominent corner of the site, with secondary smaller retail units concealing the majority of the parking from the surrounding streets. The large sales area for the DIY store sits above the carpark with the garden centre located on a lid enclosing the service yard below. The roof of the store is designed as a landscaped roof garden, providing external amenity space for the 250 apartments that surrounding it. A total of five residential cores provide dedicated access directly from the street to the residential community above.
