Getting a big B&Q store, 53 homes & a parade of shops on a small, high value site is the architectural equivalent of getting a "quart into a pint pot"; we managed it.
B&Q wanted to develop a brownfield site on the A3 in New Malden. Retailers tend to have a potato print for new stores and favour black box solutions that exclude the environment. Black proposed a radically different development that not only used 50% less land, but also generated residential and retail units. We designed the retail environment from the inside out. We harnessed environmental systems to improve the comfort of customers because happy people linger longer and purchase more products.
