Concept designs are being developed to create a series of art spaces within the shell of a chapel that previously served a reform school in Bedfordshire.
The brief envisages a mix of pottery, fine art, workshops and a music practice studio, together with meeting rooms, toilet and catering facilities. The design solution needs to respond to the ecclesiastical character of the building, whilst making it fit for the clients’ philanthropic activities and enhancing the environmental performance of the fabric. The evolving design is testing how the facilities can generate external revenue for this charity client, to support their work with homeless people from the local area.
Black bring their recent experience of working on the art rooms, gallery and radio studio at Morley College to the project, continuing the practice’s involvement in community art projects.
