Black Architecture have been commissioned by Hertsmere Borough Council to develop proposals to bring the Balmoral Drive Depot in Borehamwood back into use to provide workspaces within the local community.
The development study looked initially at new build options, but following a review by Black a retrofit solution has been progressed and submitted to the local planning authority for consent. The proposals retain and refurbish the existing structure, insulating internally and removing redundant walls. New build extension pods with bifold doors incorporate amenity blocks, keeping new service runs economically outside of the line of the existing building.
Clearstory glazing combined with Monodraft roof vents passively light and ventilate the space, whilst a roof mounted ASHP system is used to heat occupied spaces. New signage graphic on profiled cladding complete the look.
