The major construction work has now been completed in the gallery building, opening up large parts of the mass concrete structure and introducing a drainage system that will resist local surface water flooding issues. Attention is now turned to the fit-out elements.
The latest site visit has witnessed the installation of two large format doors that swing out into the gallery to provide additional wall hanging space. Woodwool ceilings are in place, a ‘window to the past’ opened up to one of the original walls and the access lift installed in the double height void to the rear of the gallery.
In the final phase of the works the plywood lined staircase will be installed around the lift, the new entrance on St Georges Road completed and an end grain woodblock floor installed throughout, referencing the building’s previous use as a public house.
