Ash Contracting have now handed over the gallery to Morley College following the completion of works to the main display spaces on the ground and basement floors.
The project was completed in time for this year’s London Open House, with attendees given an early opportunity to visit the refurbished gallery spaces. A new level access doorway opposite Southwark Roman Catholic Cathedral on St George’s Road reinstates the building’s original entrance when it operated as a public house. End grain timber flooring, birch faced plywood walls and a woodwool ceiling are stained white to unify the rooms and provide a neutral backdrop. In contrast, the basement is darker, with exposed brick and concrete floors.
Final fittings, delayed due to ongoing material shortages in the construction sector, will be applied during the college winter term break, allowing the gallery to be formally declared open in early 2022.
