Black Architecture have been engaged to progress proposals for retrofit works across a series of listed schools across Hertfordshire, addressing fabric performance deficiencies in the post war system-built structures.
The upgrades range from roof insulation works to identifying sympathetic solutions for the replacement of single glazed facades. The Grade II* listed Templewood School, with its inspiring murals by Patrica Tew that were painted in 1950, requires the construction sequencing of the modular components to be understood through research, to identify how the elevations can be dismantled, refurbished and rebuilt without harming the building.
By working closely with our heritage consultant, a picture is being built up of the various systems that were deployed across the county, testing how disassembly really works 75 years ahead of the current debate on circular economy.
